Biologics are a game-changer in Rheumatology treatment

Every day, I see the groundbreaking transformation brought about by biologic therapies in my practice. These advance treatments have kindled new hope, especially for those patients where conventional treatments have not yielded the desired results.

What Are Biologics?

Biologics are a type of medication derived from living organisms, such as cells and tissues, unlike traditional drugs synthesized chemically. They are designed to target specific parts of the immune system that drive inflammation, a key player in many rheumatic diseases. By doing so, biologics can effectively reduce symptoms, prevent disease progression, and improve the quality of life for patients.

How Do Biologics Differ from Conventional Rheumatology Treatments?

Unlike conventional treatments that often have a broad effect on the immune system, biologics offer a more targeted approach. This specificity not only enhances their effectiveness in controlling disease activity but also reduces the risk of some side effects associated with traditional therapies.

The right treatment will provide hope for patients

Conditions Treated with Biologics

Biologics have revolutionized the treatment of several rheumatic conditions, such as:

Developing a customized plan with your provider

What to Discuss with Your Doctor First

  1. Comprehensive Evaluation: A thorough assessment by a board certified rheumatologist is highly recommended to determine if biologics are the right choice, considering the specific condition and individual patient factors.
  2. Understanding Side Effects: While biologics are generally well-tolerated, they can have side effects, ranging from mild to severe. Patients should discuss potential risks with their doctor.
  3. Monitoring: Regular monitoring is crucial while on biologic therapy to ensure effectiveness and catch any adverse effects early.
  4. Cost and Accessibility: Biologics can be expensive, and insurance coverage varies. Discussing these aspects with healthcare providers and insurance companies is vital.

West Texas Arthritis Clinic customizes plans of care that maximize hope and better health for our patients. Biologics aren’t the right course for every patient. However, for those who have previously faced limited options it has been both inspiring and a reminder of why I choose rheumatology as a field: to offer hope.

The path to managing rheumatic diseases is constantly evolving and I am hopeful about the promising future biologics offer. I encourage patients to ask their rheumatologist about this treatment if other options have not worked.
